The first Episcopal services were held in Tarentum, PA in the summer of 1884 by the Bishop of Pittsburgh. A congregation was formed, and met in Tarentum Presbyterian Church until 1888. In 1888 land was purchased on Lock Street. The cornerstone for St. Barnabas Church was laid in August 1888. Two years later, in July 1890, the building was consecrated. Many of those who began the Parish were recent immigrants from the United Kingdom who had come to work in the factories of the Alle-Kiski Valley. For most of its history Saint Barnabas has been an ethnically English congregation. A tremendous overflow of the Allegheny River flooded downtown Tarentum in 1936, partially destroying the church building. Because of this experience, the congregation elected a move to higher ground. The old church building was sold in 1949, and a new facility was constructed, as money was available, in Brackenridge. Initially services were held in what is now the Parish House. The new church building was completed in 1960. In 1989 stained glass windows and a Galanti organ were dedicated by the Parish. Twenty-five priests have served Saint Barnabas since 1888. |
